What’s new

A running log of what has changed in The Saucery, written for the people using it rather than the people building it. Newest first.

Next week from the bottom of the plan

  • The meal plan ends with the way to next week. Scrolling down to Sunday left the arrows for the next and previous week at the top, out of sight, and nothing at the bottom said there was another week to go to. The plan now finishes with Previous week and Next week under the last day. On the iPhone the week's dates and arrows also stay at the top of the screen as you scroll, as they already did on Android.

The shopping list by meal

  • The shopping list shows each meal, and how much of it is bought. Mele wanted to know whether her two dinners had been bought and had to read every line for her recipe names in the small writing under each item, and Grace found no way to see just one night's things. The top of the list now names each meal on it under its night, with who's cooking and how many of its lines are ticked, like Hearty Beef Stew, You cook, 2 of 3 ticked, or All ticked once it's in the trolley. Tap a meal or a night, or a cook such as My dinners, to see only their things and what they come to; tap it again, or Show everything, for the whole list. On a phone, Hide folds the meals away.

The shopping list follows the plan

  • Say how your family eats once, and the plan remembers. Losana told Whisp her 7-year-old won't eat anything spicy and that dinner comes with rice or potatoes, and Fill My Week forgot it the moment the chat closed. Hemi turned on Quick for Wednesday every week, because it was off again each time. Settings > Family now has House rules: a few lines in your own words, words to keep off the plan like chilli, and the nights that are always quick. Fill My Week starts those nights on Quick, only suggests a recipe with something you avoid when nothing else fits, and its new ideas follow your rules, as Whisp does in chat. Tell Whisp to remember a rule and it saves it there.
  • Voice commands stay on when you leave Cook Mode and come back. Hemi turned on Narrate steps aloud and Voice commands, chose Keep in Background, reopened the app and tapped Resume, and Voice commands were off again while Narrate was still on, just when hands are floury. Voice commands now stay on for the cook you're in, through Keep in Background, Resume and the app being closed by the phone, and the microphone starts listening again as you return. If microphone access has been taken away since, it says so and shows them off. They switch off when the cook ends, and each new cook starts with them off.
  • The Resume bar no longer covers the tabs, and Back works like you'd expect. With Resume · Healthy chicken katsu curry · Step 7 of 7 along the bottom, Hemi's screen lost the Recipes, Meal plan and Shopping tabs and the Ask Whisp button, and there was no way to the shopping list until the cook was finished. The bar now sits just above the tabs, so everything stays visible and tappable, and the bottom of a list scrolls clear of both. Back from Meal plan or Shopping now takes you to Recipes, and Back from Recipes leaves the app, with the cook carrying on in the background.
  • Only the person who looks after the plan sees prices. Joining Losana's family as an editor, Mele opened her account page to the trial countdown, two prices and Choose monthly and Choose yearly, and wondered if she was about to be asked to pay. Only a family admin can subscribe or change the subscription now. Everyone else sees whether the family is on the trial or on Saucery Pass, and who looks after it, like Losana looks after the plan, on the web and in the apps, with no prices or buy buttons. The invite page also says what your role lets you do, like plan meals, add and edit recipes and add to the shopping list, and that whoever invited you looks after the plan, so you won't be asked to pay.
  • A recipe you save from a share keeps where it came from. Saving Grace's katsu curry showed Grace Liu beside the book icon, though it was Hemi's recipe from BBC Good Food. A saved recipe now keeps the original source, linked, or the name of whoever wrote it when it was typed in by hand, and the shared page says From BBC Good Food too. Recipes you've already saved are put right.
  • Adding a meal ticks the things the list only has for other meals. Adding the second week's lasagne showed Beef mince 750 g as already on your list (1.5 kg) and left it unticked, so pressing Add would have left the lasagne's mince off. That 1.5 kg was for other meals. A line is now ticked when what is on the list is for other meals only, and says so, like Already on your list (1.5 kg) for other meals. Ticked so this adds 750 g. It stays unticked when the list already counts this same meal, or part of it, so adding the same night twice still doesn't double it.
  • The shopping list's nights move when your meals do. Swapping the katsu curry on Wednesday with Thursday's stir-fry moved them on the plan, but the shopping list still put the curry's garlic and ginger on Wednesday and the stir-fry's on Thursday. Moving a meal, swapping two, pushing the week later or dragging the week into a new order now moves each recipe's night on the list too, and so does asking Whisp to. What you've ticked and how much to buy stay as they were.
  • Moving a meal you've already cooked asks first. Swapping Wednesday's katsu curry, already ticked as cooked, with Thursday's stir-fry took the tick away without a word, because a night still to come can't have been cooked yet. Moving, swapping or pushing a cooked meal onto a later night now asks first and says it will show as not cooked there; Cancel leaves both nights as they were. The recipe still counts the time you cooked it.
  • The shopping total says what is left to buy. With 25 of 29 lines ticked, the top of the list still read About $230.51 for 29 of 29 items, and there was no telling whether that was money still to spend or already spent. It now leads with what is still to get and says what is in the trolley, like About $24.98 still to get · $6.49 in the trolley, and changes the moment anyone in the family ticks a line. Ask Whisp what the ticked things come to, or what is left, and it gives the right one.
  • Shopping prices pick the real thing. 80 g of parmesan was priced at $4.79 as a 4-pack of parmesan bagels, a whole roast chicken at $6.29 as chicken frankfurters, and milk as a UHT carton, so the shop's estimate ran short. A product that only has the word in its name, like bagels, frankfurters, saveloys, stock or crackers, no longer counts as the ingredient, while Parmesan Cheese now does. Plain milk is priced from fresh milk, and a recipe that asks for a whole chicken is priced from a whole bird. On the web, the product a line is priced from now heads the list when you tap its price.
  • Each priced line says how many to grab and what it adds. 12 sausages read from $8.99 beside a 6-pack, 1.2 kg of tinned tomatoes read from $0.83 for one 400 g can, and there was no telling whether 3 tins had been counted or just 1. A line now reads 3 × 400g · $2.49, or $2.99/kg · about $2.24 for something sold by weight, and that is what the total adds up. A 2 for $4 deal is counted when the line buys two, and its note says so, or says buy 2 for the deal when the line buys one. 12 sausages now count as two 6-packs, and 3 tins as three cans.
  • SPECIAL means the thing you're buying is on special. On your phone, the shopping list's garlic line was tagged SPECIAL because a garlic bulb was on special, while the line was priced from a 500 g tub of peeled garlic that wasn't. A line in the apps is now tagged SPECIAL only when the product it is priced from is on special, or the same thing in the same size is for no more, which is what the web list already showed. Whisp reads the list the same way. And Whisp now only says something is on special once it has looked it up at your store, and names the product, like Pams Peeled Garlic 500g, $9.99, was $11.99. It no longer plans a week around beef mince and fresh veg being on special without checking, and says when it hasn't checked.
  • Fill my week's Swap no longer offers what's already nearby. With Granny's Lasagne on Sunday and its leftovers on Monday, Fill my week offered it again for Tuesday, and Swap on one night could hand you the dish another night was getting. A night's swaps now leave out what the other nights in the fill have and anything planned within three nights either side, including leftovers and nights in the week next door, and recipes you've cooked lately come last.
  • Swap finds a new idea when your book runs out. With Include new ideas on and a three-recipe book, Swap on Saturday went katsu, Thai curry, katsu, Thai curry. Once a night has been through your recipes, Swap now asks for a new idea that isn't anything already shown or planned, which uses an AI credit like the first ideas did. From your book alone, Swap says when it has shown every recipe for that night, and starts over if you press it again.
  • A price that hasn't moved says so. Pams Pure Butter at $7.39 and NZ Beef Mince at $18.99/kg said Not enough price history yet, because a price was only noted when it changed. A product whose price has held for two weeks or more now reads Steady at $7.39 since 7 Sep, with Buy When Needed, and the lowest, average and highest prices now count today's price too. On Android, the product screen's price advice wasn't showing at all, and now does, and its price chart runs up to today. Whisp reads it the same way and says the price has held since then.
