Set Up Your Family

What is a family in The Saucery?

A family is your shared cooking space. Everyone in the family sees the same recipes, meal plan, and shopping list in real time.

Creating a family

After signing up, you'll be asked to create a family:

  1. Tap Create a Family.
  2. Give your family a name (e.g. "The Pecks", "Our Kitchen").
  3. Say how many you usually cook for. New meals on the plan start at that number, and you can change it later in Settings → Family.
  4. That's it: you're the family owner.

Inviting members

In the app:

  1. Go to Settings > Family.
  2. Under Invite Members, type who it's for if you like, choose the role they will join as and tap Generate Invite Link. With a name, you can put them on the meal plan as a night's cook before they join.
  3. Share the link by text, email or any messaging app.

On the web, open Account, find the Family section, add who it's for if you like, choose a role and press Create invite link. Links that haven't been used yet are listed there, and in the app, where you can copy, share or revoke them.

Each link expires after 7 days and works once. You can make a new one at any time.

Joining from an invite link

Opening the link on a phone takes you to a page with Open in the app. If you'd rather use a computer, or don't have the app yet, choose Continue in the browser.

In the browser, a new person enters a display name and email and presses Create an account & join. There's no password to choose. Next time, sign in on the web with the link we email you. If the email already has an account, sign in and you'll come back to the invitation to accept it. If you're already signed in, one press of Join is enough.

Waiting for an invite

If you're waiting to join someone's family, ask the person who runs your family to send you the link from Settings > Family. Open that link and it makes your account and joins you to their family in one step. You don't need a password, and there's nothing to set up on the sign-in page first.

Using The Saucery on your phone after joining on the web

The account made on the web has no password. In the app, either tap Forgot password? on the sign-in screen to set one, or sign in with Google or Apple using the same email.

Joining with a code in the app

If you've already signed up in the app, you don't need the link. When you're asked to set up your family, tap Join Family and paste the invite link, or just the code from the end of it, into Invite link or code. The code is also shown on the invite page under No app yet?.

House rules

Say once how your family eats, and the meal plan remembers it. Go to Settings > Family in the app, or the House rules section of Account on the web.

  • In your words: anything the planner should know, like "No spicy food, our youngest won't eat it. We have rice or potatoes with most dinners." Fill My Week's new ideas and Whisp both follow it.
  • Keep off the plan: words such as chilli or mushrooms. Fill My Week only suggests one of your recipes that mentions them, in its name, tags or ingredients, when nothing else fits, and says so.
  • Always quick nights: the weeknights that are always busy. Fill My Week starts them on Quick, and you can still change any night when you fill.

You can also tell Whisp, like "remember we don't do spicy", and it saves it to your house rules. Only a family admin can change them; everyone else can see them.

Family roles

  • Owner: The person who created the family. Can manage subscriptions, API keys, and all settings.
  • Member: Can use all cooking features -- recipes, meal plans, shopping lists, and Whisp chat.
