Using the Weekly Meal Plan
The meal plan
The Meal Plan tab shows your week at a glance. Each day can have one or more recipes assigned to it.
Adding recipes to the plan
- Go to the Meal Plan tab.
- Tap the + button on the day you want to fill.
- Browse or search your recipe collection.
- Tap a recipe to add it to that day.
You can add multiple recipes to a single day (e.g. a main and a side).
Moving and removing meals
- Within the week: press and hold a meal to pick it up, then drop it on another day. A day that already has a meal swaps with it.
- To any night: tap ••• on the meal, then Move to…. Nights from today on are listed a week at a time, each saying whether it's free or what's planned. Use the arrows to reach another week.
- Onto a night that's taken: you're asked what to do with the meal already there. Swap puts it on the night your meal left. Push later moves it to the next night, and if that one's taken, its meal moves on a night too, and so on until a night is free, into the next week if it has to. Push later leaves the night you moved from empty.
- Later: Postpone opens the same list, starting the night after the meal. It marks the meal as moved from its first night, and keeps its ingredients off the next shopping list because you've already bought them.
- A meal you've cooked: move or swap it onto a night that hasn't come yet and it's no longer marked cooked, though your cooking history still has the night you made it. Moved to today or an earlier night, it stays cooked. A different meal put on a cooked night starts out not cooked.
- Remove: tap ••• on the meal, then Remove.
Who's cooking
Each meal on the plan can name the person cooking it, so everyone can see whose night it is. It doesn't have to be someone with the app.
- To set it: tap ••• on the meal, then Who's cooking?. Pick someone in your family, someone under Not in the app, or Nobody to clear it. On the web, click the line under the meal.
- Someone without the app: choose Someone else… and type their name, such as Mum. The name is kept, so next time it's in the list.
- Someone you've invited: give the invite link their name when you make it, and they're in the list as (invited) before they join. When they join, the nights you gave them become theirs. A name you typed earlier works too: invite them by the same name.
- Forgetting a name: in Settings > Family, under Cooks not in the app, tap Forget. Their nights then say nobody is cooking. On the web it's on the Account page.
- Where it shows: under the meal on the plan, and on Tonight and Coming up.
- Moving a meal: the cook goes with it. Move or swap a meal to another night and its cook moves too.
- With Whisp: ask "which nights is Mele cooking?", or say "Mele's cooking Monday" or "Mum's cooking Thursday".
Editors and admins can set the cook. Someone who leaves the family is taken off the nights they were cooking.
How many a meal is for
Each meal on the plan says how many servings it's for, such as 4 servings. The shopping list and Cook mode scale the recipe to that number, whatever the recipe was written for.
- To change one meal: tap ••• on the meal, then Servings…, and step it up or down. On the web, click the servings line under the meal.
- New meals: start at your family's Default servings, in Settings → Family.
- Baking keeps its yield. A cake that serves 12 or a batch of 24 biscuits is planned at what the recipe makes, since a smaller household still bakes one cake. Recipes tagged dessert or baking, and ones like muffins, loaves and scones, are treated this way. To change it for a recipe, edit it and switch Scale to the household on or off.
- Changing the default: you're asked whether to change the meals already planned too. Yes changes every meal from today on that hasn't been cooked, except baking. Nights already gone and meals you've cooked keep their number.
- With Whisp: say "make all this week's dinners for 6" and it changes each night, then tells you what each one is for now.
Editors and admins can change servings. If you've already added the week to the shopping list, tap the cart again to add the new amounts.
Fill My Week
Tap the sparkle at the top of the meal plan to fill the week you're looking at.
- Choose the nights. Every empty night is ticked. Untick any you'll sort out yourself, such as a night out. Nights that already have a meal are left alone.
- Mark the quick nights. Tap Quick on a night that needs dinner in 30 minutes or less, prep and cooking together. Nights your family keeps as quick nights in its house rules start on Quick already.
- Choose where the meals come from. From your book uses only the recipes in your book, including the two it started with. Include new ideas also suggests dishes you don't have yet, for the nights your recipes can't cover. It starts on new ideas when you have fewer recipes than nights.
- Tap Suggest. Each night gets one dinner. Recipes you haven't cooked lately come first, nothing repeats in the week, and anything your house rules keep off the plan comes last.
- Adjust. Swap shows the next option for that night, Choose picks any recipe yourself, and Remove leaves the night empty.
- Tap Add to plan.
Your house rules are set in Settings > Family; see Set Up Your Family.
A new idea goes on the plan under its name straight away, and Whisp writes the full recipe into your collection over the next minute or so. New ideas use AI credits; suggesting from your own recipes doesn't.
How the meal plan connects to shopping
Planning a meal does not change your shopping list on its own. When the week looks right, tap the cart on the meal plan to add its ingredients to the list. You choose what goes on, so you can leave off anything already in the cupboard.
The list is a snapshot from that moment. If you change the plan afterwards, tap the cart again to add the new meals.
