Managing your tags

tags tag rename merge remove delete vocabulary baking manage tags organise

A tag is a word on a recipe, such as vegetarian, weeknight or baking. Search and the home screen use them, and so does Whisp.

Your tags stay as you set them

The tags on a recipe are the ones you or your family gave it. Saving a recipe or having it tidied up after an import doesn't rewrite them, and a recipe you tagged baking stays baking. It isn't turned into dessert.

Adding tags to a recipe

Edit the recipe and use the tags field.

  • iPhone: type a tag and tap Add or Return, or type a comma. Tags you already use are offered underneath, with how many recipes have each, such as weeknight (12). Tap one instead of typing it.
  • Android: type a tag in Add a tag, and pick from your own tags as they're offered.
  • Web: type tags in the Tags field with commas between them, such as weeknight, vegetarian. They're saved in lower case.

Choosing from the tags you already use keeps you from ending up with weeknight and week night as two different tags.

Manage tags

Rename, join and remove tags for the whole book in one place. Editors and admins can do this.

  • iPhone and Android: open Contents on the Recipes tab and tap Manage tags at the foot.
  • Web: Tags in the row of links under the Recipes heading.

Each tag is listed with how many recipes have it.

Rename a tag

Rename weeknite to weeknight and every recipe that had the first now has the second. On iPhone and Android tap the rename button beside the tag; on the web tap Rename and type the new name.

Join two tags

Rename a tag to the name of one you already have and the two become one. You're asked before it happens, and it says how many recipes already have the tag you're joining. It can't be split again afterwards.

Remove a tag

Tap the remove button beside a tag (Delete on the web) and confirm. The tag comes off every recipe that has it. The recipes stay in your cookbook.

All of this changes the tags for the whole family, on every phone.

Many recipes at once

On the web, the recipe list can add a tag to, or remove one from, several recipes at once. See Adding and editing recipes.
