Drafts: recipes you try before you keep

draft drafts keep discard Whisp write a recipe try change too salty how did it turn out shelf

When Whisp writes you a recipe in chat, it doesn't go straight into your cookbook. It's a draft: a recipe you can read, cook from and shop for, that only you can see until you decide to keep it.

Drafts are for Whisp's recipes in the apps. A recipe you type in, import from a link or a photo, or save from a shared link goes into your cookbook as usual.

What a draft is

  • Only you can see it. Nobody else in the family sees a draft, in the apps, on the web or when they ask Whisp.
  • It's not in your cookbook yet. It doesn't show in your recipe list, your search, the home screen's sections, or the count on the Contents page.
  • It doesn't use a recipe place. If your plan has a limit on recipes, a draft isn't counted until you keep it.
  • You can still use it. Open it, scale the servings, cook it in Cook Mode and add its ingredients to your shopping list.
  • It says so. A draft has a Draft stamp and Not in your cookbook yet, with the day it will be discarded.

Keeping or discarding

A draft shows Keep and Discard in three places:

  • On the card in the chat where Whisp wrote it. Tap the card to open the recipe.
  • On the recipe itself, as Keep in cookbook and Discard.
  • On the Drafts shelf.

Keep puts it in your cookbook, in its chapter, for the whole family. Discard checks with you first, then deletes it for good. Keeping needs an editor or admin; a viewer can read a draft and nothing else.

A draft you leave alone is discarded for you after 30 days. Its page says Discarded on 25 Nov unless you keep it, with the real date, and on the shelf each row says how long it has left, such as Discarded in 12 days or Discarded tomorrow.

Planning a draft on the meal plan, hearting it or sharing it keeps it first, because a plan or a link can't point at a recipe nobody else can open.

The Drafts shelf

  • iPhone and Android: on the Recipes tab a Drafts card appears when you have any, with how many. Tap it to open the shelf.
  • Web: on the Recipes page, Drafts appears in the row of links under the heading, with the number in brackets.

With nothing waiting, the shelf says No drafts.

Change a draft by telling Whisp

A draft is where you can say how you'd like it different. Whisp changes the draft itself, instead of writing you a second recipe.

  1. Open the draft and tap Change it with Whisp. A chat opens with the draft already in front of Whisp, and asks what you would change.
  2. Say what to change: "It was too salty", "No chilli, the kids are eating it" or "Use thighs instead of breast".
  3. Whisp changes the ingredients and steps, and adds a dated line to the draft's notes about what changed and why, such as 26 Oct: less salt, it was too salty.

Whisp makes the change straight away and leaves the draft a draft. It keeps it only if you ask. The dated note is for drafts: a recipe already in your cookbook is changed without one.

After you cook a draft

The first time you finish cooking a draft, or mark it cooked, its page asks How did it turn out? with Tell Whisp and Not now. Tap Tell Whisp and say how it went: "Lovely, but it needed more time." Whisp changes the draft for next time. Not now puts the question away for good; it's asked once per draft.

Each message to Whisp uses an AI credit. See AI credits.

On the web

The web app has no chat, so a draft there can be read, kept and discarded, and its page says that Whisp in the app is where it gets changed. Drafts are shown on the web shelf and the recipe page; they're never in the recipe list.
