Chapters and the contents page

Your cookbook is arranged like a printed one. Every recipe sits in one chapter, and a Contents page lists them.

The chapters

Chapter What goes in it
Breakfast Morning meals and brunch.
Mains Dinners.
Sides & salads What goes beside a main.
Snacks & starters Small things to nibble or start with.
Baking Bread, cakes, biscuits and bakes.
Desserts Puddings and sweet things.
Sauces & basics Sauces, dressings, stocks and staples.
Drinks Anything you pour.

The list is the same for every family, and it's in this order on the Contents page.

Where a recipe's chapter comes from

A recipe is filed for you. Whisp picks the chapter when it writes a recipe, and an import or a recipe you type in is filed shortly after it's saved. A recipe not yet filed is in no chapter for a moment and says so on the Contents page.

You can choose a different one. Edit the recipe and pick a chapter; on a phone it's a set of choices in the details, and on the web it's the Chapter field. A chapter you choose is yours: nothing files the recipe again. A chapter that was picked for you says Filed for you. Pick another and your choice sticks.

A recipe shows its chapter under the title. Tap it to see that chapter's recipes.

The Contents page

Your Cookbook on the home screen opens it. It says how many recipes and chapters are in your book, such as 88 recipes in 8 chapters. On the web, Contents in the row of links under the Recipes heading opens it too.

The page lists each chapter with how many recipes are in it. Tap one to open it.

Your Cookbook starts at the top of your home screen, under Coming up. Move it wherever you like when you arrange your home screen. It can't be taken off, so your chapters are always one tap away.

Drafts aren't counted, because they're not in your cookbook yet. See Drafts.

Inside a chapter

A chapter lists its recipes A to Z. At the top, narrow it by how long the recipe takes, prep and cooking together:

  • Any time: everything in the chapter.
  • Quick: 30 minutes or less.
  • Under an hour: an hour or less.
  • Slow: two hours or more, or a recipe tagged for a slow cooker.

On the web the same choices sit above the chapter's list.

Chapters on your home screen

Each chapter can be a section of the home screen. Open Customise your home screen and look for Chapters.

Dinners come from Mains

When you ask Whisp for a dinner, fill a week of the meal plan or look at Dinner Ideas, only recipes in Mains are offered, along with any not yet filed. A salad, a side of rice or a cake isn't suggested as Tuesday's dinner, even if it's tagged dinner. You can still plan one yourself.

Organising many recipes at once

Editors and admins can move many recipes into a chapter in one go on the web. See Adding and editing recipes.
